What's your technique for studying poems? [English]

For the English AQA board.
Not just Poems from other Cultures, but the literature poems too.
I'm kind of stuck.

My way of studying it, has always been reading it, and then writing what I think about it. Just brainstorming. Trying to pull out the main theme of the piece of literature.

For language you just need to talk about each poem separately, answering the question
For literature you have to compare poems
