Assi1993:
here's the question,
Protons are accelerated to an energy of 10Gev and the beam is made to collide head-on with a beam of anti-protons,also with an energy of 10GeV.How much energy is available from each collision to produce new particles?
Take the protons mass as 940MeV/c^2

waiting!!!.........

Total energy of the particles initially are (10+10)= 20 GeV

Now we need to find the binding energy of the particles.

E = ^mc2

^m : Mass defect

The mass defect will be [940MeV/c2 - - 940MeV/c2] = 1880MeV/c2 since both protons and anti-protons have same mass but are oppositely charged.

Therefore binding energy will be : E = 1880MeV/c2 x c2 = 1880MeV

So total energy available for products : 20GeV + 1880MeV = 21.9GeV
