how to use torrent?

i am a newbie here as well as to bit torrent..really dont know anything about bit torrent. :(
anyone can explain in detail how to start off with bit torrent if i wanna download files from this site?
actually i had installed bit torrent onto my computer and later used it to download some files, however i cant open any files downloaded at all..should the file be opened with bit torrent itself or some other programmes?
really blur..pls help to clear my queries~~thx
