Self interest comes first, which should coincide with the common purpose.

A simple example: If I want to sell something, the other person must be interested to buy the same thing. It serves our self interest, but satisfies our common purpose - to get rich or to lead a better life. When this is combined with many buyers and sellers, there is unity.

You just talked about soldiers.  ::)

Common purpose comes first: they all have to fight for and protect their country from attacks. Then, their self-interest for survival comes.

Love is like the wind. You cannot see it but you can feel it. ;D
Whether it's common purpose or self-interest that comes first, love still dominates.  8)

Why have you included your knowledge about economics here? :P
